In 1980 I began a thirty-year hunt for the source of my Georgia farmer family’s oral almanac. I gathered star stories in the Southeast U.S. and—because of the South’s cultural connection to it—in West Africa.

Various oral traditions have been the focus and challenge of my research. They, in turn, led me to the early history of written literature and to some of the new thinking about the standard version of the first millennium BC Gilgamesh epic.
